How to Pack for a Week in a Carry-On

Richard Wooten • November 6, 2026

How to pack for a week in a carry-on: outfit math, liquids strategy, shoes that earn their space, and a checklist that keeps you under the limit.

Direct answer: Pack a week in a carry-on by limiting shoes, repeating outfits with one laundry plan, and treating liquids like a puzzle you solve before you reach the airport. Use packing cubes so the bag stays searchable. This is a method post; the item-by-item master list still lives on our carry-on packing list.

You won't forget anything because I won't let you.

How many outfits do you actually need for seven days?

Fewer than seven full outfits. Build a color story so tops mix with two bottoms, then add one nicer look and one activity-specific set if needed. Plan one sink-wash or midweek laundry for underwear and socks instead of packing a museum of backups.

What is the shoe rule that saves the most space?

Two pairs max for most week-long trips: the shoes you wear onto the plane and one alternate. A third pair has to earn its spot with a specific event. Stuff socks into shoes. Wear the bulkiest pair in transit.

How do liquids and toiletries fit a week without a checked bag?

Follow the TSA liquids rule: containers 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less, in one quart-sized bag, one bag per passenger for carry-on screening. If you can switch, solid sticks and bar soap are easier than liquids. A clear toiletry bag speeds screening (PACKISM clear quart-size toiletry bag). For hotel days, a hanging kit keeps the sink usable (Hanging Travel Toiletry Bag).

Medications and exceptions are item-specific. Confirm odd items in TSA's What Can I Bring? tool instead of trusting a group chat. The final decision rests with the TSA officer at the checkpoint.

What packing system keeps a carry-on from exploding midweek?

Cubes by category: tops, bottoms, underwear, dirty laundry. Compression helps with knits (shop compression cubes). Keep a "first night" pouch on top with charger, meds, and sleepwear so you are not unpacking the entire bag in a dark hotel room.

Personal item tip: an underseat tote can hold the overflow that is awkward in the wheeled bag (Travelpro Crew Classic Underseat Tote). Check your airline's personal item size before you fly; depth on this bag can exceed some carriers' limits.

Week in a carry-on FAQ

Can you really pack a week in a personal item only?

Sometimes for warm weather with laundry access. Most people do better with a carry-on plus a personal item for a full week.

What about hair tools?

Many hotels provide a dryer. If you must bring a hot tool, pack it in the carry-on wheeled bag, protect the cord, and confirm any battery rules for cordless tools before you fly.

Do packing cubes actually save space?

They save sanity first and space second. Compression cubes help with soft clothes. Hard items still take the space they take.

Should I wear my coat onto the plane?

Yes if it is bulky. That single choice often decides whether the bag zipper closes without a wrestling match.

Where is the full item checklist?

Use this method post for strategy and the carry-on packing list for the full inventory.
